Strengthening Livelihoods for Persons with Disabilities and Their Families
Persons with disabilities and their families can face barriers to earning a regular income, including limited access to suitable equipment and livelihood resources. For single parents caring for a child with a disability, balancing paid work with daily caregiving responsibilities can create additional challenges.
In August 2026, AIRD, with support from Suzlon Foundation, provided livelihood assistance to support two beneficiaries with disabilities in K. Shanmugapuram village. The assistance included goat-rearing support through a family caregiver and an interlock machine provided directly to a beneficiary.
Two goats were provided to Anish’s mother, a single parent caring for her son. This support aims to help her develop an additional source of household income while continuing to meet his care needs. Goat rearing offers an opportunity to build a livelihood close to home and contribute towards the family’s expenses.
A tailoring interlock machine was provided directly to another beneficiary with a disability to support their tailoring livelihood. The machine enables neatly finished seams and garment edges, helping the beneficiary offer a wider range of tailoring services and strengthen their earning potential.
Through this initiative, AIRD and Suzlon Foundation aim to expand livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities and their families. By supporting both individuals and caregivers according to their circumstances, the initiative seeks to strengthen household financial security and support care with dignity.
